Mother of Groom Speech

Well, it was a moment that had absorbed me for weeks before it happened. Like Mary, I pondered in my heart and looked back at the birthday tributes I had done for you, my firstborn, Nathan, for many years. At the wedding, as the moment approached, I was almost paralyzed with nervousness. However when the moment finally arrived, all nervousness quickly dispelled as I spoke from my heart to you and your new bride, my new daughter-in-love, Sarah.
I post this today for you both as a remembrance:
August 24, 2019 - Nathan and Sarah๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’ž

Mother of Groom Speech

I remember calling my parents when I found out I was pregnant to let them know and bawling my eyes out. Unfortunately, it was not from joy, but sheer terror for this bookworm who never dreamt of motherhood. Fortunately for me, God was forming a baby in my womb who would be a classic text book baby in his development and behavior, because yes, I had to look at books to know what to expect and do. God knew what I needed, and He gave me you.

Mike and I prayed and pondered over your name and God gave us “Nathan”.
Nathan is the name your Dad and I chose very carefully. We wanted your name to represent 'you' in biblical tradition. Taken from the name of the prophet Nathan, advisor to King David, it meant "gift from God."
...gift from God...
In Hebrew, it literally means "he gave."

Heavens Cross Ministries gives an insightful look into Nathan:
Nathan, the prophet, lived up to his name, "He[God] has given." Nathan was a necessary and helpful gift from God to David. He served as God's spokesman to David and proved himself a fearless friend and counselor, always willing to speak the truth, even when he knew great pain would result.

You are indeed a gift from God to all who know you, a necessary and helpful gift from God to us, your family, and now to Sarah, your wife. You are fearless in trying new things. In your vulnerable writing I have seen you be God’s spokesman, speaking truth. You are a loyal friend and counselor. You do things with all of your heart striving for excellence. In your future career as a lawyer, you will have the opportunity to speak truth into a culture that is bent on neutralizing it.

I remember the Biblical scenes that you loved to act out would always involve sheer passion and rebuking: like Jesus overturning the tables in the Temple courtyard rebuking the Pharisees; or Jonah shouting to the Ninevites to repent! You also loved being Samson tied to the columns and loudly roaring as you broke them apart!
You, my son, do show all the qualities of your namesake.

You did make some amusing mix-ups as a child, like when you proudly announced to the kindergarten class that you had your first son when your brother was born. You had probably heard me say that I had Daniel specifically for you, so that you would not be an only child and have someone of your own. (Well, now you have not just 1 sibling but 9 more!! Lucky guy!) Or there was that time when you told me that if any kid in your class misbehaved, the teacher would hang them by their noses on the wall giving me a graphic disturbing image of kids hanging on hooks by their noses on the wall.
You had a penchant for imitating books you just read or movies you just saw. Like when you saw The Hunchback of Notre Dame, we went to Red Lobster and just as a group of Caribbean ladies were leaving in their church dresses and hats, you shouted, “What a woman!” to which they all turned around and smiled, each one taking it personally, probably thinking what remarkable good taste you had! You imitated the Lord of the Rings books by writing your very first novel in Grade 4!

And Nate, one of the greatest joys you have given me is sitting next to me in church and hearing you sing and worship, or hearing you and your brother sing together or jam to music while driving. I remember the first time I heard you sing in the musical Anne of Green Gables, I was in awe. Wow, my son can sing!

Your Dad and I and Daniel are so proud of you. There is a sense of the noble in you, a prince among men. Your Dad said, “What a happy day when Nathan was born!” You are loved, not because you have accomplished so much in your life thus far,[which you have!] but because you are you, a perfect gift we delight in, just as God delights in each one of us, just because we are His.

I made so many parenting flaws. Then I look at you, and hey, you turned out great anyway.
Because God.
Because there are some prayer warriors in my family. Thank you to my parents and siblings! Mom, thank you especially for being the first one in our family line to embrace Jesus as the Way and relentlessly praying for the rest of your family.
Because Grace.
His Hand has always been upon you, opening doors and protecting you.

My exhortation to you in your new role as a husband, is first to dwell on your blessings and be grateful. Nurture a grateful heart. Never fail to thank anyone who has blessed you, especially your wife.

Second, be teachable. That requires humility. You're going to be living with another human being you did not grow up with and whose habits are different. Compromise will be necessary. More than that, be open to change. Let humility give you a teachable heart.

Third, communicate. Keep short accounts, don't let 'stuff' build up, clear them up constantly. Resolving conflicts is what builds a deep foundation of growing intimacy. Bottling up stuff creates walls and is probably not good for your health.

Over all of these, let God be the leader in your family. Build a firm foundation of faith for your family as the head of it.
Never neglect participating in a church community, giving of your resources, praying and fellowshipping together. We were created for community.
However, never neglect a time alone with your God, to replenish your soul and release your will to His. That time alone with Him will equip you to love your wife and others. Follow Jesus' example.

And, finally and most importantly, do love your sweet Sarah through His heart. See her through His eyes. Speak to her through His words, truth laced with love. Touch her gently with His Hands. Listen to her with His ears with sensitivity and discernment. Walk with her courageously through the path He has purposed for you.

And Sarah, you have to know that you are an answer to prayer from when Nathan was a child. He told me the other day how he would groan inwardly when I brought my Stormie Omartian “The Power of a Praying Parent” to their bedside for night time prayer, lengthy prayers which included: “Lord, send the right wife at the perfect time and give Nathan a clear leading…prepare that person who will make the perfect wife for Nathan. I pray that this woman will be a godly and devoted servant of yours who loves You and lives your way and will be like a daughter to me.

You, Sarah, are an answer to my heart’s desire for my son. When he first told me about his interest in you, I only asked, “is she seeking after God?” And he said, “we both are!” Nathan's word comes from truth and conviction. My heart was filled with peace and his joy could not be hidden.

Sarah, apart from your obvious outer beauty, you shine with an inner beauty of character. You are relentless in your love and loyalty for your loved ones. You are resourceful, smart and sensitive. Nathan told me once that you are the most stabilizing influence in his life. You bring out the best in him. Thank you so much to you and the entire Marshall family for embracing my son with such warmth and openness and treating him as one of your own. That weekend we spent at your cottage with you allowed me to see your family and their interaction. Dave and Anna, I must say that you have raised incredible human beings, each so gracious and kind and generous like you are. I fell in love with all of you, different as you are. That brings such peace to a mother’s heart to know that her son is loved by his in-laws and at total peace.

That particular Stormie Omartian prayer ended with this and so will I:
May Nathan have one mate for life, who is also his closest friend. (And that is you, Sarah). Lord, may they be mutually loyal, compassionate, considerate, sensitive, respectful, affectionate, forgiving, supportive, caring, and loving toward one another all the days of their lives.” Amen.

(By the way, guys, you can borrow my Stormie Omartian book anytime when the time comes! ๐Ÿ˜Š)

26 years old and last birthday as a single man!

Happy 26th Birthday to my firstborn!

26 years ago, you looked like this:

And today, here you are looking every inch the lawyer you're gong to be soon:

I found it so hard to write a post because I am so emotional. In just over a month, you will be married to the woman that we prayed for you since you were a child. Sweet Sarah. Wow.

I look at you and I see a man I truly admire. How you have grown physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I have so many regrets over some of the stuff you've had to go through and how it impacted you deeply, like the lean times, like my PPD in your first year, like my ongoing depression,....ah, so many things to say "I'm so sorry..."
Then I look at you, and hey, you turned out great anyway.
Because God.
Grace.
His Hand has always been upon you, opening doors and protecting you.

My exhortation to you as you head to matrimony, is first to dwell on your blessings and be grateful. Nurture a grateful heart. Never fail to thank anyone who has blessed you.

Build a firm foundation of faith for your family as a the head of it. Never neglect participating in a church community, giving of your resources, praying and fellowshipping together. We were created for community.
However, never neglect a time alone with your God, to replenish your soul and release your will to His. Follow Jesus' example.

And do love your sweet Sarah through His heart. See her through His eyes. Speak to her through His words, truth laced with love. Touch her gently with His Hands. Walk with her courageously through the path He has purposed for you.
Hey, I'm thinking this could be a 'mother-of-the-groom' speech in the making, eh?

Anyway, my dearest son, in the days ahead when stress might build up, take the time to be alone and look to Him to quiet your heart as you release any and all to Him Who is able. You will one day realize when you are old like me (hahaha) that your walk of faith will be one of slowly realizing He desires your complete dependence and surrender, something hard to grasp when you are young and so capable. And it's only because He loves you perfectly. Marriage will never give you a love that 'satisfies' because only His love can do that.
To be fully known and fully loved.

Father, I commit my dearest firstborn to you and ask that You cover him in the days ahead with Your grace and protection and provision. Give him a hunger for You and Your Word and a desire to grow with the family of God. Give him a humble and contrite heart, a grateful heart, a giving heart, a merciful heart, a forgiving heart. In the same breath I echo this for Sarah, my soon-to-be daughter-in-love. Even as I grieve that my mother-in-law despises me, I pray that you will fill me with your love for her and watch over her family as well. I am so grateful that they have embraced Nathan so warmly. In the precious Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.

And this album blessed your Dad and I so many years ago. Hope the words bless you too:

Always, with love bursting from my heart and full of prayers and memories,
Your Mom, Sita๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ

21 Years Old: My Last-Born is Officially An Adult!

Happy 21st Birthday
Daniel!
Feb. 17, 2019

My Exhortation For You: Jude 1: 21-25 (NLT)

My dearest Dan,
I cannot believe that my baby is now officially an adult.
Anytime I see you, my heart fills to the brim. You bring me such joy.
I can only imagine that is just a taste of what your Heavenly Father feels when He looks at you.
And that is what I want you to dwell on in this your 21st year:
He delights in you!
May this knowledge grow deep into your heart and satisfy your deepest need to be delighted in. It is a foundation you will need in this season when doors close, when relationships go awry, when waiting gets hard, when life's circumstances make you feel you are being 'punished', when Satan pummels you with lies.
Like Jesus, may you bring the Truth of His Word and character to mind: I am loved by my good, good Father. He simply delights in me. Rehearse this in your mind daily. Psalm 139 reminds you that He knew you in the womb and formulated a purpose for you. So draw near to Him daily, not be doing stuff, but by simply being quiet in His Presence, sitting with Him, letting Him talk to you through His Word and in Spirit whispers in your soul.

Your 21st year was marked first by your desire to obey Him in the act of baptism on Easter Monday 2018 followed by a call to be a worship leader and many people have affirmed your calling and gifts.

I am still in awe to watch and listen to you. In the spotlight, people may comment on your performance, either negatively or positively. Either way, let their words roll off your back, as you ground yourself in the fact that your Father delights in you. Before every session, tell Him, "This is for You, Lord." and worship Him with all your heart. This is what will radiate and penetrate the hearts of those participating.

You also already have felt the strong resistance to your calling with Satan's scheme to sabotage your emotions any which way he can. So be alert and discerning. Step back when negative thoughts assail, and ask if it is consistent with God's character.

Your Dad and I and your brother Nathan are so very proud of you, and no matter what, we will always be there for you.

Remember the thoughts from your 18th birthday? Note how the prayer highlighted in pink was answered since then!:

"...Needless to say, Dan, you have brought so much joy to this world with who you are.

I delight in you.
I can only imagine How God delights in you.

While you will always be my 'baby', you are definitely a young man now, with a mind and voice of your own.

I see so many qualities I admire in you:
-like your sensitivity.
-like your loyalty.
-like your love.
-like your ability to easily forgive.
-like your artistry.
-like your rhythm.
-like your love of music.
-like your attention to God's Word.
-like your grace to others.

My exhortation for you, Dan, is that you nurture the Spirit in you, for He alone is the One Who will empower and highlight the gifts the Father gave to Daniel and Daniel alone.
May you pray like Daniel: (Dr. Michael Youssef)

Daniel’s Prayer

"We see the effectiveness of prayer by a righteous person in the Old Testament prophet Daniel. His prayers provide a model for us to follow. Read his powerful plea to God in Daniel 9:4-19. Now, let's take a look at the key components of his prayer.
Start with praise. Daniel began his prayer by praising God. Daniel's focus was not on himself, but on God's greatness. He prayed to "the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with all who love him and obey his commands" (Daniel 9:4). He acknowledged God as absolutely righteous, but also merciful and forgiving. Begin your own prayers with praise and thanksgiving to God.
Praise Him for His glory, His power, and His love. Thank Him for His daily provision in your life, your salvation, and your many blessings. Spend time just adoring God.
Confess your sins. Daniel confessed that Israel had sinned. He didn't try to dismiss, justify, or sidestep the fact that Israel had made a grave error. He didn't make excuses to God, but took responsibility. Daniel stated up front in his prayer, "We have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws" (Daniel 9:5).
When you go to God in prayer, don't play the blame game when it comes to your sin. Acknowledge any element of sin or misdoing—intentional or unintentional—related to the situation or circumstance.
Prayer: God, I want to praise You today for Your love and for the gift of salvation. Thank You for giving us Your Word to provide examples like Daniel for us to follow. Forgive me any sin in my life. In the name of Jesus. Amen."

As you head off to university or college, you will be confronted head-on with philosophies hostile to your faith. May you purpose in your heart like Daniel did:
Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself ..." (Daniel 1:8a)

You share with your namesake a strength of character, a young man of deep convictions.
May you grow to understand the ways of God like Daniel did by carving out the best time with God where you can earnestly listen to Him and feed your soul.

You are blessed with good looks like your namesake :) : "in whom there was no blemish, but good-looking, gifted in all wisdom, possessing knowledge and quick to understand, who had ability to serve in the king's palace." (Daniel 1:4)
but may you find your value in being His child, asking Him for wisdom. May you grow like Daniel did in the fear of the Lord, for from there flows wisdom.

"...Daniel was exposed daily to the riches, the luxury, and all the other seductions of the Babylonian Empire. Yet he was determined to remain consecrated, not partaking of the delicacies provided to him by the king. To refuse the provisions meant sure consequences for him and for those overseeing his instruction. Yet Daniel remained steadfast, knowing that God would honor his choice to obey divine law rather than the laws of men....
Daniel had a greater respect for and fear of God than he did of the king. Knowing and believing that God would use him, Daniel kept his focus on God...

My prayer is to see your heart captivated by a cause dear to His heart and that this passion will be reflected in all your work.

My prayer is that you will always be a display of His glory.

As for that future daughter-in-law I hope to have one day, pray about her from now. I pray for a woman who even right now is pursuing God's heart and that in His perfect timing, your lives will intersect!

I have made so many mistakes in 'mothering' and you have been generous in your forgiving. Thank you, Dan!
My love for you knows no bounds!

So my prayer for you is this:
Father, thank You so much for this child You 'lent' me for a while. Thank You for the way You wired him. Thank you for giving him a heart for you. Thank you for being with Him through the good and bad. Father, You have laid a calling in his heart. Please continue to affirm and confirm through the inevitable waiting as you prepare his heart and character. May he be like Daniel, fearless and consistent in his worship of You and his character marked by integrity. Cover him with your grace and protection like a canopy. Give him Your eyes and mind to discern Your Voice from among the many others that assail him. I now re-commit him to you, You Who loves him perfectly.
In the mighty Name of Jesus, I pray.
Amen.

Always in my thoughts and prayers

2 songs for your new year. First one is an old one, but the one God brought to mind:
The Voice of Truth - Casting Crowns. May that Voice of Truth grow louder daily.
The second one and the one I first heard you sing and fell in love with the lyrics: So Will I. May you indeed grasp daily the heart of worship these words attest to.
