The beauty of a child...

In my last post I prayed about God being enthralled with the beauty of His children. I could not stop thinking about that concept. I asked myself, "What was so appealing?" Then the verse came to mind:
Luke 18:17
I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. (NIV)

The more I thought about it, the more it came to my mind as I pictured my own sons and when their beauty is most appealing:

in their most childlike state -
sleeping,
listening in wide-eyed wonder to stories of God,
or gawking at the world around them,
hugging a dog, hugging me at bedtime,
showing off for Daddy or Mommy,
saying exactly what is on their minds,
jumping into the arms of their father in the pool without taking their eyes off him,
obeying my instructions without question...

Childlikeness is said to "marked by innocence, trust, and ingenuousness [showing innocent or childlike simplicity and candidness] " (Merriam's Webster online dictionary).
(vs. childishness which is marked by immaturity and lack of poise.)

"A childlike man is not a man whose development has been arrested; on the contrary, he is a man who has given himself a chance of continuing to develop long after most adults have muffled themselves in the cocoon of middle aged habit and convention."Aldous Huxley (1864-1963)

Father, I pray today that I will shed the childishness that thwart Your blessing in my life; the tantrums when I don't get what I want when I want; the belief that I can control my life if only...; I pray for the childlikeness that has a pure heart to see You and revere You and say "WOW!" I pray for a childlike heart to say "Sorry, Father". I pray for a childlike heart to show off just for You. "Look at me, Abba!" I pray for joy that springs from delight with life and creation. I pray for a pure love to flow through me and out of me unpolluted by the toxic experiences of life. Let me be as a child coming to her Father with delight, joy, expectation, safety, reverence and most of all, love. In the Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.
